The Challenges of Growing Grass in Sandy Soil

Growing grass in sandy soil is challenging. Sand lacks the structure to
hold moisture and nutrients. It is usually acidic which is a condition
inhospitable to grass growth. Having the soil pH checked is the first
step. Grass needs a pH value of 6.5 to 7.0. If it falls below 6.5, it is
acidic and lime will need to be added. It it is above 7.5, it is
alkaline and sulfur will be applied. A chart telling how much of these
amendments to apply is available at garden centers or from the
cooperative extension office.

Now that the pH has been corrected, the structure must be improved.
Planting a cover crop of buckwheat will smother weeds and add an
abundance of organic material. This will be tilled in about mid-season.
Rye grass is then planted which will fix nitrogen in the soil. This will
be tilled in next spring. The soil is now ready to plant. For a healthy
lawn, select the type of grass that does well in sandy soil.
